Losing a sibling one deeply loves can be a very strong motivator for taking action, and for Carole Olson, losing her sister to lymphoma was the beginning of her commitment to help find a cure for cancer.
Over twenty-four years ago, Carole had hoped to save her sister Sandra by being her bone marrow donor. Unfortunately, Sandra passed away at age 39 before the bone marrow transplant treatment could be done.
Since then, Carole and her husband Milt have given tribute gifts for her sister, become annual donors and included Fred Hutch in their estate plans. Carole said she hopes that the Hutch will find a cure for lymphoma as well as other cancers that have affected her family.
Carole and Milt have attended various educational events at the Hutch, whose roots are also founded in sibling love. Dr. William Hutchinson founded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in memory of his brother Fred, a major league baseball player and manager, who also died in his 40's.
Carole remarked, "Every time we're able to attend a luncheon or lab crawl, we are amazed at the latest research going on and what type of cancer it is helping. The brain power at the Hutch is amazing and inspirational, giving us all hope that cures will be found in our own lifetime."
